Revelation 2:5 NKJV
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
Revelation 2:5 NKJV
Jesus reminded the church in Ephesus what they had in Him: zeal and love for God, manifested in preaching the gospel, healing the sick, casting out the devil, feeding the poor, caring for those in need, and simply loving people.
The church did the right things, like protecting itself from wrong doctrine, judging right and wrong, identifying false prophets, and staying away from evil deeds.
These are all good values that Jesus did commended them; these are things that are inward-looking. The guarding of the truth and holding on to Christ is important to have so that they can effectively minister the love of God to others.
When the intake and the possession of God have no output, it creates self-contamination and becomes unhealthy for our soul.
In order to know what the first work was, we need to see the first church.
They were people who became a miracle for others, hands that feed, clothe, and love people around them.
The works were a copy of the life of Christ on earth. Jesus did not only preach but met the needs of the people; He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and gave His life for all mankind.
The knowledge of God without our actions will bring us to a religious cycle and make us puff up that we are set apart but without any fruits.
Our true faith in Christ and our love for Him will be reflected by the way we serve one another. We become people who are not only concerned about what is happening around the world but people who take steps to fix the problem.
Let us move with compassion as the Holy Spirit leads us to love one another and do the work of Christ here on earth.
Live in the blessings;
Ps Ambrose
